Antivirus programs work by regularly scanning files for changes in size, known and common viruses and other programs such as worms and Trojan horses. They run continually on your computer and are the simplest way to protect yourself. You can also protect yourself by: Not automatically opening attachments – are they from someone you know? Does the title look like spam? Scan incoming email attachments through an anti-virus check or set it up so your antivirus runs at all times and automatically scans. Regularly update your antivirus if it doesn’t already do so automatically. Antivirus tend to update all the time, though once you have paid your fee, they are usually free. You will be alerted when your antivirus needs to update. Watch what you download from the web, particularly from websites you haven’t been on before and free screensavers and games. Scan CDs and DVDs before you use them, particularly when transferring information from one CD to another.
