McAfee News
McAfee warn that there is a growth in attacks against small-scale commercial sites
Traditionally spammers and Internet phishing has been a scourge of banks and large multinational Internet shopping pages, but McAfee have announced that they have detected a change in trends and they have noticed that more and more Internet attacks are being launched against small commercial sites.
During the past few years banks have been spending considerable amounts of time and money upgrading their security procedures and it appears that they have achieved a level of success in combating the spammers. Chip and pin services, advanced password protection and extra layers of security have all played a role in this in this success and further advances are expected in the near future.
As a direct response to this increased security on such websites, spammers and phishers have turned their efforts towards the smaller, less secure, independent commercial sites on the Internet. With fewer password, less layers of protection and code that is easier to hack, McAfee state that such sites provide much easier targets.

MyDoom on the attack
The United States and South Korea have been suffering the worst cyber attacks in history over the last two weeks, after vital government buildings and organisations were hit with the MyDoom virus.
Authorities believe that the attacks, which targeted the New York Stock Exchange and the US Treasury amongst others, may have originated from a master server in the UK.
The master server controlled eight smaller command and control servers which in turn hacked smaller individual PCs, making them drive traffic to the targeted websites in an attempt to overload them, causing them to crash.
The attacks highlight the rise in cyber-terrorism, both in frequency and intensity, as criminals turn increasingly towards digital infrastructure as a method of spreading panic and causing economic damage to their enemies. |

Recycle your old PCs
More and more of us are calling for an increase in greener PCs as the problem of E-waste becomes more apparent..
With more than 30 million PCs being dumped in the US alone, with a number of the components containing hazardous waste, environmental groups are supporting public calls for the industry to address the issue.
Recycling your old PCs prevents them from ending up on old technology dumps, which today are mostly found in West Africa. By making sure that you dispose of your old technology responsibly you can prevent substances such as arsenic and lead from finding their way out into the natural environment.

Spammers stoop to the lowest depths
The tragic Air France AF447 disaster, in which more than 228 people died when the plane broke up on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, is being exploited by a ruthless team of spammers, it has been revealed.
Just 10 days after the tragedy people began receiving emails that used the crash to gain their attention. Subjects such as “Last seconds of plane”, “Another plane crushed” and “A-330 blackbox record” arrived in their inboxes, once opened they actually carried adverts for products such as Viagra and Cialis.
In one day alone more than several million of these spam messages were reported to be in circulation, it seems that there are people out there who will sink to any depth in order to infiltrate email accounts with spam.

Trojan thieves target cash machines
Travellers in Russia and Eastern Europe have been warned to be on their guard as new breed of Trojans have been found hiding in ATM cash machines across the region.
The programmes allow sensitive personal information, such as account and PIN numbers to be taken and stored on a file inside the machine until it can be removed by the gangs.
The news is particularly worrying as it would require physical access to the machine at least twice for such a crime to take place, meaning that the crime is being perpetrated by people with direct access to the machines which can only suggest that bank employees are somehow involved.
The first attack took place in Russia just over a year ago and resulted in some arrests, but it seems that the gang continues to operate.
Such is the level of sophistication that once installed the attacker can access your personal details on the ATM’s screen using a special card and password to activate the Trojan.

US firms take drastic action to prevent worms
AutoRun worms are spreading across computers because of an increase in the number of people swapping files through USB ports.
The problem has got so bad in some companies across the US that employers have taken to swabbing superglue into the USB connectors to prevent employees from plugging their own devices into office computers.
Many employees although aware that their USB devices have the potential to be harbingers of doom, do not realise that other gadgets, such as MP3 players, camcorders and even digital picture frames are in fact just glorified USB devices.
The massive growth over the last few years in these gadgets these worms to move from PC to PC quietly spreading themselves across the globe. Short of taking the drastic action of glueing up your USB ports the advice remains the same: disable AutoPlay, keep up-to-date antivirus and enable a firewall.

Digital recognition
Glowing reviews for the latest release of McAfee products:
The latest collection of software products from McAfee has received glowing recognition from the global technology press after a recent article gave an in depth comparative analysis of the available anti-virus products. The products included in the review came from software developers McAfee, BitDefender, Kaspersky, Check Point, Symantec, Microsoft, F-Secure, CA and PC Tools.
McAfee received ‘excellent’ scores in terms of overall performance, its anti-spam software, its range of different features and in terms of value for money. In each case the McAfee internet Security Suite finished with a far better evaluation than its competitors.
In a further section, McAfee’s SiteAdvisor won plaudits for its ‘dependable’ protection, finishing in first position and offering users the firmest protection against the dangers of intrusive phishing tools. A spokesman for McAfee indicated that they were delighted with the content included in the report that justified that hard work of the McAfee anti-virus engineers. |
